Happy Little Sunflower - Free Pattern

                            Happy Little Sunflower

So for some reason plants just don’t fare well in my care at all ! Like seriously I water them, give them sunlight, everything a plant needs to survive ! Even been known to have a chat to them over a cuppa tea but nope! This Yorkshire girl just doesn't speak their language ! Crochet however, crochet I can relate to ! This wee sunflower will forever brighten your day & never wilt !

This is the first in my series of pot plants and its pretty adorable! The idea for this special flower came from end of year teacher gifts ! If you have kids like me then you'll be aware of the awesome work our teachers do each year, these past two years especially with the added global pandemic & disruptions due to lock-downs. My eldest has had her particular teacher for 3 years now and I think that's pretty special. We aren't sure whose class she will be in next year so we wanted to make her something super special. Every time I see a sunflower it just brightens my day, My daughter has one of those smiles that does the same & is known by a lot of people at school as smiley, so I thought hopefully it may be a reminder of the bright smile my daughter comes into school with each day !

So enough gushy gushy, lets get started on how we made it !

Materials

8ply Yarn in various Colours

3mm Hook

Embroidery Needle

Scissors

Wire

Stuffing and Rice

Any size yarn and corresponding hook will work, I used a 8 ply cotton yarn and a 3.0mm hook. It is recommended to size down in hooks for a tighter stitch for amigurumi. Colours can be suited to your own preference. My Sunflower sat at around 30cm. The thicker the yarn, the bigger your Sunflower!

Assembly

1. Attach a petal to each of the 18 stitches on the middle of the flower

2. Add wire to the stalk with excess at the bottom to put into the pot

3. Sew the stalk to the back of the middle of the flower with the petals in between, stuff the middle of the flower before finishing

4. To the underside of the stalk & flowers join the yellow yarn

i.  SC around, SL ST to join,

ii. CH2, DC around

iii. join the petals to the stalk, by SL ST in row 7 of each petal, FO, & weave in ends

5. Stuff the Pot, I used a mixture of fibre-fill & rice (in a fabric pouch to avoid any leakages) in order to make my pot a little heavier like a paperweight!

6. Sew the Soil to the pot using the loops from the back loops of row 28 on the Pot

7.Poke excess wire from stalk through centre of Soil round & Sew Stalk to Soil

8. Sew the leaf to the bottom of the stalk

9. If you would like to add a face - Sew the eyes & blush on the pot & embroider a smile

All done! Great Work! I hope you enjoyed this blog post !
