Crafting with Izzy - Dinosaur Keyrings

Crafting With Izzy - Dinosaur Key-rings

Kia Ora!

My eldest girl Izzy absolutely loves dinosaurs ! She's 8 now & its been one of those obsessions that she has kept throughout her years. She also loves crafts, and like other craft obsessed youngsters she is forever coming to me with her little ideas! Last week she told me she wanted to make a key-ring, she brought me some dotty green fabric out of our stash & we set together planning! Izzy is learning the basics of sewing, she hasn’t quite grasped the ability to use the machine by herself yet but with some help she is loving it ! We take turns pressing the pedal to gauge the correct pressure needed & maneuvering her fabric where she needs it.

This is the process we followed!

Firstly, Izzy chose a silhouette design she liked, she then drew around this onto the back of her fabric, we talked about having stitch allowance & she drew a line around a half inch bigger. This made it easier as we could then follow the inner line when sewing to keep the shape as much as possible. We cut this out & did the same on the back of another piece of fabric so we had 2 shapes ready to sew. We also cut out a square to act as a wee tab at the top to attach onto our key-ring.

We sewed the tab first by folding the square in half (right side together) & sewing down the other side, we then popped this the right way round so we had a tube shape. We took this & lined it up over one of our pieces in the place we would want our tab. We folded it over & sewed a holding stitch through both ends of the tube & one piece of our dinosaur.

We took both dinosaur pieces & sewed them together along the line of the shape we wanted, making sure to leave a gap of around 2cm so we could turn it the right way round. Once its the right way round we stuffed it & sewed up the 2cm gap to finish ! We then added our Key-ring hardware so Izzy could pop it on her bag for school !

This was a super easy process & a great opportunity for her to practice her machine skills !

She is now cutting fabric out to make keyrings for her sister & teachers !

Hope you enjoyed this Blog post & it inspired you to try this out either yourself or with your children !
