A-ROAR-able Lion Hat Pattern

Kia Ora ! Welcome to the second in my Hat Pattern Series ! How adorable is this one ! My 3 yr old was super happy with this lion hat he asked for ! (Disclaimer ** Please be aware that once worn the wearer will roar their wee hearts out!!)

Skill Level : Easy

Materials

1 ball of Yellow 8 ply cotton yarn

1 ball of Orange 8 ply cotton yarn

1 ball of Brown 8 ply cotton yarn

Cream 8 ply cotton yarn

Black 8 ply cotton yarn

White 8 ply cotton yarn

4.5mm Hook (hat)

3.0mm Hook (features)

Embroidery needle

Stuffing

Any suitable size yarn and corresponding hook will work, I used a 8 ply cotton yarn and a 3.0mm hook.  Colours can be suited to your own preference.

Abbreviations & Stitches

YOH - yarn over hook

Ch - chain - YOH, pull through loop

St. - stitch

SC - single crochet - insert hook into stitch, YOH, pull though stitch (2 loops on hook), YOH & pull through both loops

HDC - Half Double Crochet - YOH, insert hook into stitch, YOH, Pull through stitch (3 loops on hook) YOH & pull through all 3 loops

DC - Double Crochet - YOH, insert hook into stitch, YOH, Pull through stitch (3 loops on hook) YOH & pull through 2 loops, YOH & pull through remaining 2 loops.

TC - Treble Crochet - YOH twice, insert hook into stitch, YOH, Pull through stitch (4 loops on hook) YOH & pull through 2 loops, YOH & pull through 2 loops, YOH & pull through remaining 2 loops.

NumberSC - amount of stitches to make in next stitch

SCNumber - SC in next Number of stitches

INC - increase - 2 stitches made in one stitch

DEC - Decrease - insert hook into  the next 2 stitches, YOH, pull back through both stitches, YOH & pull through remaining loops

INV. DEC - Invisible Decrease - insert hook into front loop only of the next 2 stitches, YOH, pull

through 2 front loops of stitches, YOH & pull through remaining 2 loops

SL. ST - Slip Stitch - insert hook into stitch, YOH, pull through both stitches

FO - Fasten Off - ch but pull through all cut yarn

Rep. - repeat

BLO - Back Loops only

FLO - Front Loops only

 

Instructions

Our basic hat shape is worked in the round and joined with a sl st after each round. Each round is then started with ch2. Happy Crocheting !

 

 

Hat

 

Using the chart, find the correct measurements you need for the size you are wanting. Please stop working the pattern below when you have reached the correct circumference size, the example below is for the 3-10 yr old example I made using the yarn & hook I chose - please check your measurements even if you are wanting the same size. We will be working in HDC stitches

 

Row 1: in magic ring (or Ch.3, sl.st in first ch, insert hook in middle of circle) 8HDC (6) SL.ST to join

Row 2: CH2, (INC) repeat x8, SL.ST to join (16) 

Row 3: CH2, (HDC, INC) rep x8, SL.ST to join (24)

Row 4: CH2, (HDC2, INC) rep x8, SL.ST to join (32)

Row 5: CH2, (HDC3, INC) rep x8, SL.ST to join (40)

Row 6: CH2, (HDC4, INC) rep x8, SL.ST to join (48)

Row 7: CH2, (HDC5, INC) rep x8, SL.ST to join (56)

Row 8: CH2, (HDC6, INC) rep x8, SL.ST to join (64)

Row 9: CH2, (HDC7, INC) rep x8, SL.ST to join (72)

 

The one in the example is for a 3-10 yr old & went up to row 9, if you are wanting a bigger size please keep increasing the same way, increasing by 8 stitches each time until you have your desired circumference.

 

To carry on our hat we are then going to HDC around on each round, starting with a CH2 and ending with a SL ST to join each round. To get the desired length on my hat I had to do 14 more rounds of HDC. You will do as many rounds that are needed to get your desired measurements.

 

Row 10-24 (14 rounds): CH2, HDC around, SL. ST to join (72)

 

Once completed, FO & weave in the ends. You now have a basic beanie shape.

 

Ear Flaps

 

Once you have your hat shape we can now add ear flaps on ! To size these I usually make them each a quarter of the stitches on your last row. For example mine ended with 72 stitches which means my flaps are going to start with 18 stitches each. Please be mindful of where your row line is (make sure its not right down the front of the hat). You can see I have placed mine on the back side of one of my flaps. Attach your yarn where your first ear flap will start & HDC along a quarter of your hat, for me 18 stitches. We are then going to turn our work & decrease each row by two stitches, at the start & end of the row until we are left with 2 stitches

 

Attach yarn

Row 1: CH2, HDC18, TURN (18)

Row 2: CH2, DEC, HDC14, DEC, TURN (16)

Row 3: CH2, DEC, HDC12, DEC, TURN (14)

Row 4: CH2, DEC, HDC10, DEC, TURN (12)

Row 5: CH2, DEC, HDC8, DEC, TURN (10)

Row 6: CH2, DEC, HDC6, DEC, TURN (8)

Row 7: CH2, DEC, HDC4, DEC, TURN (6)

Row 8: CH2, DEC, HDC2, DEC, TURN (4)

Row 9: CH2, DEC2, TURN (2)

FO

 

Repeat in right place for the second ear flap. Attach coordinating colour for border (I used brown) & SC around the edge of your hat & ear flaps, finishing with a SL ST to join, FO.

 

Braids

 

Choose 3 colours for your braids, cut cut 6x 80cm lengths of each colour. Using a larkshead knot (with the yarn of the same colour together, fold it in half, pull the loop where it is folded through the ear-flap then place the ends of your lengths through the loop created & pull tight to lock in place) attach them to the end stitches of the ear-flaps. Then braid the colours together, when you are near the end use of of the colour to wrap around the end & thread through the tighten & hold the braid in place, cut the ends to your desired lengths.

Row 5 - 8 (4 rounds): SC around (24)

FO, Leave a tail for sewing to hat

 

 

Eyes

 

With iris colour

Row 1: in magic ring (or Ch.3, sl.st in first ch, insert hook in middle of circle) 6SC (6)

Row 2: (INC) repeat x6 (12)

Attach White yarn by pulling it through the two loops of the last unfinished SC

Row 3: 2SC, SC, 2HDC, 2DC, 2HDC, (SC, 2SC) rep x3, SC, SL.ST, FO

Attach Black yarn in corner of inner eye with a longish starting tail at the beginning

Row 4: SL.ST around, except in 2^nd DC do SL.ST, CH1, SL. ST loosely, FO & pull yarn through to back of eye, ensure a tail long enough to sew to hat

Use the beginning of the black yarn to embroider a vertical pupil, go back & forth 3-4 times. Use White yarn to add highlights horizontally to the bottom & top of the pupil. Tie ends at the back & cut short, leaving the tail for sewing

Cheeks

 

Make 2

In Cream

Row 1: in magic ring (or Ch.3, sl.st in first ch, insert hook in middle of circle) 6SC (6)

Row 2: (INC) repeat x6 (12)

Row 3: (SC, INC) rep x6 (18)

Row 4: (SC2, INC) rep x6 (24)

Row 5: (SC3, INC) rep x6 (30)

Mane

 

Cut lots of 5cm pieces of yarn in the colours you want.

 

 

Assembly

 

1. Sew the nose on centrally, place cheeks in position so you know how far up you need to sew it, stuff before closing up stitches

2. Sew each cheek at either side of the nose, stuff before closing up stitches

3. Sew the eyes approx 3 stitches either side of the nose

4. Attach Ears from approx row 5 at either side of head

5. For the mane you can either attach your pieces of yarn by using a larks-head knot or inserting one end through a stitch & double knotting your yarn over the stitch. Insert as many pieces as you like depending on how full you want your mane.

6. Make sure all your ends on woven in & secure.
